The Q tile is worth 10 points in Scrabble — one of the highest values on the board — but it becomes a dead weight when you have no U to pair it with. Knowing which Q-without-U words are valid in standard Scrabble dictionaries (TWL and SOWPODS) turns a frustrating rack into a scoring opportunity.

The Complete Q-Without-U Word List

Every word below is valid in North American Scrabble (TWL06) unless noted. Point values use standard tile scores without any board multipliers.

Why These Words Exist Without U

Most Q-without-U words entered English from Arabic, Hebrew, or other languages where the Q represents a sound not followed by a U vowel. QANAT, QADI, and QIBLA all come from Arabic. QOPH and QAPH come from Hebrew. This borrowing pattern is why every word in this list has a specific cultural or geographic origin — they’re not random letter combinations.

Strategy: Playing Q Without U

Play QI early and often. QI scores 11 points and fits almost anywhere a two-letter word works. It hooks onto dozens of existing words and can be extended to QIS later in the game.

Hold QOPH and QAPH for premium squares. These 18-point words on a double-word square return 36 points. On a triple-word square they hit 54. Four tiles for 54 points is exceptional value.

Use SUQ as a dump play. If you’re stuck with Q, S, and U on your rack and can’t form QUEEN or QUART, SUQ lets you play three tiles while scoring 12 and clearing an awkward combination.

Don’t panic when you draw Q late. If the bag has fewer than seven tiles and there’s no U in sight, QADI and QAID both use a D, I, and A — common tiles you’re likely to have. Scan the board for open spots where either word fits.

Know which words require a blank. QIBLA and QANAT both need five tiles including uncommon letters. If you’re holding Q and need to clear it, the two- and three-letter words are more reliable than waiting to build QANAT.

SOWPODS vs. TWL: Know Your Dictionary

If you play in North American club or tournament Scrabble, you use TWL (Tournament Word List). International and British players use SOWPODS, which is significantly larger. Several Q-without-U words — including QAWALI and some QABALAH spellings — are valid in SOWPODS but not TWL. Always confirm before playing in a competitive setting.

For casual home play, most families accept any word that appears in a major dictionary.

Practice Pattern: Build Around Open Vowels

When you scan the board for a Q-without-U play, look for open A, I, and O vowels first. QI needs an I, QAT and QADI need an A, and QOPH or QOPHS need an O. This is faster than staring at your rack and trying to remember every word from the list. If one of those vowels is already on a premium lane, check whether the Q can land on a double-letter or triple-letter square before you settle for a small safety play.

Find More Q Words Instantly

Memorizing this list helps, but during a real game you need answers fast. Our Scrabble Word Finder lets you enter the letters on your rack and instantly see every valid play, with point values calculated. You can filter by word length, starting letter, or ending pattern — useful when you know a Q word is valid but can’t remember how it’s spelled.

You can also use the Word Unscrambler if you want to see all possible words from a mixed set of letters that includes Q.

FAQ

Q: Is QI a valid Scrabble word? QI is valid in both TWL (North American Scrabble) and SOWPODS (international play). It means the vital life force recognized in Chinese philosophy and medicine. It’s the most commonly played Q-without-U word precisely because it’s short and fits in tight spaces.

Q: Can I play QI in Words With Friends? Yes, QI is valid in Words With Friends. The game uses a dictionary based on ENABLE (Enhanced North American Benchmark Lexicon), which includes QI. It scores 11 points before any tile or word bonuses.

Q: What is the highest-scoring Q-without-U word in Scrabble? On a standard board, QOPH and QAPH each score 18 points at face value. Placed on a triple-word square with strategic letter placement, QOPH can score 54 or more. Longer words like QABALAH score 21 base points but are harder to place without bonus squares.

Q: Are QOPH and QAPH both valid? Both are listed in the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary (OSPD) and TWL. QOPH is the more common spelling; QAPH is an accepted variant. If you’re ever challenged, both should survive.

Q: What should I do if I’m stuck with Q and no U and none of these words fit? If the board genuinely has no room for any Q-without-U word, consider using a blank tile in place of a U to play a standard QU word (QUEEN, QUIZ, QUITE). A blank tile sacrifices its own point value but lets you score with high-value letters like Q. As a last resort, you can trade the Q back into the bag — you lose a turn, but holding Q for multiple turns with no play is usually worse.

Q: Is QANAT in the Scrabble dictionary? QANAT is valid in SOWPODS and accepted in many club settings that use extended word lists. It refers to a type of ancient horizontal well or irrigation tunnel. Check your specific tournament’s word list before playing it competitively.
